Frequently Asked Questions
Honest answers from a family doing its best. We're not a clinical resource, just a shop that cares.
-
Is Miko's Code only for autistic children?
Not at all. Miko's Code was built by an autism parent, but the shop is for any family with a kid — ADHD, sensory processing differences, anxiety, developmental delays, twice-exceptional learners, or kids who just don't fit neatly into a category. If it works for your child, we are glad to support you.
-
How is Miko's Code different from a typical toy store?
We're a family, not a retailer. Everything we carry has been researched, tested, or vetted by people living this, not merchandisers chasing a trend. We think about sensory profiles, open-ended play, and whether a product respects who a kid actually is, not who someone thinks they should be. That said, we're a small shop doing our best, not a clinical resource.
-
How do you choose what to carry?
Everything in the shop has been through our hands first or the hands of families we trust. We look for products that are open-ended, sensory-aware, and designed without assuming there's one right way to play or learn. We're not a certification body; we're a family that's done a lot of research and a lot of returning things that didn't work.
-
How do you know whether a product actually works?
Honestly? We don't, not for every child. We share what's worked for us and for families in our community. But neurodivergent kids are not a monolith, and what works beautifully for one child may do nothing for another. We try to only stock items we've found useful. When in doubt, trust what you know about your kid.
-
What does "sensory-friendly" mean to you?
It's a starting point, not a guarantee. We look for products with flexible use. But every child's sensory profile is different. We encourage you to review product details carefully before purchasing, especially if your child has specific sensitivities.
-
Do you recommend products based on a specific diagnosis?
No. We are not physicians, therapists, behavioral specialists, or school professionals, and nothing on this site should be taken as clinical advice or a treatment recommendation. For guidance specific to your child's diagnosis, needs, or developmental goals, please work with your pediatrician, occupational therapist, or other qualified professionals. We're parents sharing what's worked for us, that's the full extent of it.
-
Are your products therapeutic?
Some products we carry are used in therapeutic contexts, but we don't sell them as therapy, and we don't make therapeutic claims. If you're looking for tools to support a specific therapeutic goal, we recommend consulting with your child's care team first.
-
Do you offer products for children who communicate differently?
We actively look for products that support a range of communication styles, including AAC users, non-speaking children, and kids who communicate through play, movement, or art. We believe all communication is valid and try to carry products that reflect that.
-
What if my child doesn't like something I buy?
That happens... especially in our own house. Every child is different, and no product works for every kid. We do our best to describe what each item is like in use, but we can't predict what will land for your child. We encourage you to read product descriptions carefully before purchasing. Our return policy allows returns on unopened items within 7 days of delivery for store credit. We are not able to accept returns on opened or used items, and we are not responsible for products that simply aren't a fit for your child.
-
What age ranges do your products cover?
Most of what we carry skews toward early childhood through elementary, but many of our picks are age-flexible, especially sensory tools and open-ended toys. We note age guidance on product pages where it's relevant.
-
Do you ship internationally?
We currently ship within the United States only.
-
How do returns work?
We accept returns on unopened, original-packaging items within 7 days of delivery. Approved returns receive store credit. Customers are responsible for return shipping. See our full Return Policy for details.
